The Book Thief
554 pages
The novel by Markus Zusak called The Book Thief is not for people who aren't up for a challenge. The book is narrated entirely by Death and takes place during the Holocaust. It has many characters in it, but one main character is Liesel Meminger who was an orphan taken in by foster family. She only loves one thing in the world: books. When she first came to her foster family she couldn't read, but had just stolen her first book about digging graves. Her foster father helped her learn to read and soon she had many stolen books. Liesel shares these books with her neighbors as well as a Jewish man that her foster family is hiding in the basement. Liesel and the Jewish man are very close until he is forced to find a different hiding place. This book was very hard to read and even harder to keep track of what was going on. The narrator, Death, kept using flashbacks and other stories to tell the main story. I do think this was a good book though. Whoever reads it just has to make sure to take a lot of notes.
